Conversation on sustainable mining

The School of Engineering in Mines of the University of Azuay, together with the Chamber of Industries of Azuay and the Alliance for Responsible Mining in Ecuador (AMRE), held on Thursday 6 June a discussion to address the problem of water within of mining projects.

The event was held in the General Auditorium and was attended by Abelardo de la Torre, an engineer from the National Water Authority in the Republic of Peru, and two French exhibitors belonging to the transnational company Veoila, which handles the issue of water in mining industries around the world.

During the program, the speakers spoke about the defense of different environmental factors, including water. In the same way, they gave their respective space to the latest technologies that are currently used in mining.

Leonardo Núñez, Coordinator of the Mining Engineering career, said that these talks seek to socialize about the issue of mining in Azuay, so the event was called to state agencies, the Municipality, the Provincial Council, the Secretariat of Water (SENAGUA), students and academics.

"There has been a lot of talk about the pollution of the waters by the mining company. Every industry generates environmental impact, we can not deny that; but we are, at this moment, dedicated to doing a responsible mining and from the chair of the university, from the classrooms, we try to impart to our students the responsibility in the water management ", added Núñez.

He also spoke about the future of mining and said that it is estimated that by the year 2021, mining will generate more than ten billion dollars between investments, exports and taxes and generate around one hundred thousand jobs.
