Modern track maintenance systems

The June 5 was held in the General Auditorium of Science and Technology a conference about modern road maintenance systems.

The event, aimed at students of Civil Engineering, was taught by Bekaert Corporation, a multinational technology and market company in advanced solutions for the transformation and coating of metal. The conference was in charge of Antonio Urteaga.

José Vázquez, Coordinator of the School of Civil Engineering, argued that many modern road constructions fail, as there is no proper development of them.

In order to ensure road safety, a construction method based on a modern slope support system (amplitude that exists between the lower part and the upper part of a wall, creating a slope) for the construction of roads was presented.

The stability and performance of the work depends on the correct implementation of slopes, since battered slopes represent a great deficiency in the realization of these projects, said Vázquez.

Another issue to consider is the cost of materials, the company Bakaert presented the tools with which they work and argued that it is optimal to invest in quality products that ensure reliability, but above all to focus on the safety of citizens.

Among the materials that the corporation uses to execute its projects, is the use of geogrids and dynamic barriers, which allow to give stability to the vehicles that transit the roads.

Those attending the event agreed that it is very important to work in risk management, because when an earthquake or a landslide occurs, people notice that the buildings are not strong enough. So a viable alternative is to work constantly in the maintenance of public buildings with quality materials and procedures.

One of the biggest problems in this kind of situations is to stop the operation of some public work by landslides or rockfalls, that reality is even more serious than the absence of the road itself.

It is not possible to pretend that the citizenry limits itself to using diverse routes for this type of inconveniences that should not represent such big threats, mentioned Vázquez.

Among other positive aspects, the system of road maintenance proposed in the conference acts favorably against road pollution, as a road with sufficient vehicular fluidity, does not generate an exaggerated automobile congestion.

In addition, it is important to consider that a car occupies a greater amount of gasoline when it travels roads that are in poor condition, full of potholes, cracks, landslides, covered with rocks. Unlike a vehicle that transits through a road in good condition, which will spend a much smaller amount of gasoline.
