ARDIS 2019, Week of Design for Crafts

The second edition of the Week of Design for Crafts (ARDIS 2019) organized by the Inter-American Center of Crafts and Popular Arts (CIDAP) took place from 1 to 11 in April and students and professors from the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Art participated from the University of Azuay.

"We support and give academic endorsement in this meeting that brings together designers, craftsmen, cultural managers, institutions, universities, students, professionals, all talking about a single issue that interests us, which is the relationship between design and craftsmanship," said Dean Genoveva Bad.

The project included workshops from 01 to 11 in April and conferences from 8 to 10 in April. Each activity was carried out by experts from different Latin American countries, as well as professors from the Faculty, such as Silvia Zeas, Alfredo Cabrera, Genoveva Malo, Edgar Reyes, María Elisa Guillén and Freddy Gálvez.

During the event, the winner of a contest launched in January was also awarded, proposing the design of a jewel that links design and craftsmanship.

"ARDIS lets us see that we still have to build this relationship between designers and artisans, which I think is an excellent way to show a design with an identity. Valuing each of the roles that artisans and designers fulfill, not pretending that one covers the other's field, but working hand in hand, "said Silvia Zeas.

Craft Design Week was born with the aim of reflecting, debating and making visible the potential that design has in relation to craftsmanship, the problems and limitations from the point of view of the artisan and designer, and the value of design with identity.

"CIDAP has been linked to the Faculty of Design for the emphasis that the faculty had since its origins, which was to create a different design, a design that has to do with the context and culture and specifically in recent years, through of a collaboration agreement, we have been working together, "Malo explained.

The ARDIS project is carried out once a year in the month of April and, in its two editions, it has achieved a greater recognition of the potential of linking design with crafts, spaces at the level of cultural and institutional management and recognition of value of local design.
