The UDA wins the Golden Mask in the comparsas

The University of Azuay won the Golden Mask and the first prize in the 2019 Masquerades, institutional category, in the traditional comparsas for the Day of the Innocents in Cuenca, along Huayna Capac avenue.

The UDA participated in the event with a comparsa inspired by the movie Mad Max.

The students of the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Art were in charge of preparing the event, assembling the cars that accompanied the parade and choosing the clothes that the participants used.

This year the students of the Faculty of Science and Technology also participated.

Manuela Cordero, representative of the Department of Liaison with the Collective of the Faculty and teacher in charge of coordinating the participation in the groups, gave an interview to explain what the participation of the UDA in the event consisted of.

What was the theme with which the UDA paraded this January 6?

The theme of the University of Azuay was "Post-apocalyptic Ecuador".

It was a theme chosen jointly with the students, especially with the children of Design of Objects that were organized.

Why was it chosen to make a comparsa on this topic?

First, the intention was to reflect on the environmental issue, which is always floating among us.

On the other hand, we wanted to be guided in a specific aesthetic; that's why all the costumes of the comparsa were inspired by the movie Mad Max.

How many students participated?

We register 460 students in the comparsas database.

In addition to them were the professors of the Faculty, of which 36 were directly involved.

This year also graduates and students of Science and Technology participated, with an interpretation of dinosaur machines.

We estimate that about 500 people participated in the comparsa of the University.

What were the main attractions of the comparsa of the UDA?

The main attractions were in the first four cars.

The first one was the Old Madman, who is the owner of the water; the second was the music car, which featured a professional guitarist; after Mad Nuel, who was like a Mad Max; and finally the car of La Cabreada, a woman who protects other women from the villain.

What expectations were there for the participation of the University?

Our expectations have always been the best, go out and do the best paper.

Beyond winning or losing, what we want is to do things well and that students have fun so that the University is well represented; especially this year for the encouragement and participation of students.

That's why we are happy for the news that we have won.
