UDA Choir participates in "Boletín y Elegía de las Mitas"

The Polyphonic Choir of the University of Azuay participated in the scenic cantata “Boletin y Elegía de las Mitas”, with music by Edgar Palacios and poetry by César Dávila Andrade, last October 10.

The text, one of the most important in Ecuadorian literature, is an anti-colonialist poem published in 1959.

The staging took place in the framework of the celebration of the 100 years of the birth of Cesar Dávila Andrade, which began last September 12 with various events, performances and exhibitions.

"Today we are here as basins that we have put our hearts to give our poet what in life maybe could not be given, that's what this month was all about, in which our mission has been accomplished, invading the streets of the city with different artistic manifestations to pay homage to this great poet, "said Martín Sánchez, President of the House of Culture, Núcleo Azuay.

The musical interpretation was in charge of the Symphony Orchestra of Cuenca, under the direction of maestro Michael Meissner, the Youth Choir of the José María Rodríguez Conservatory and the Polyphonic Choir of the University of Azuay, under the preparation of the teacher María Eugenia Arias Maldonado. The scenic interpretation was in the hands of the National Ballet of Ecuador, under the direction of Rubén Guarderas Jijón.

The work is structured in 12 paintings, one more dramatic than the other. María Eugenia Arias Maldonado commented that the choir has as much prominence as the soloists, who interpret the voices of those mitayos that were sacrificed and tortured at the time of colonization.

Edgar Palacios, composer of music, was present in this interpretation and was given two recognitions, one from the House of Culture and another from the Municipality of Cuenca; both highlighted his career as a creator and director of choirs and symphony orchestras, as well as having 150 compositions and 50 albums.

It can be said that Edgar Palacios has been able to perceive the greatness and the feeling of the poem, the Indian and mestizo spirit that characterizes it and has managed to transfer it to the melodic richness, in which the orchestral and choral parts are added, adding the interventions of the soloists and the narrator.

This is the seventh time this cantata is performed in the country and the third in the city of Cuenca; On this occasion, 49 choristers and four lyric soloists participated.
