Conference on racism and hate crimes in Ecuador

The January 17 was held in the Faculty of Legal Sciences of the UDA the talk entitled "Racism and Hate Crimes in Ecuador", dictated by the lawyer and former student of the Estefany Leon Street School.

This conference was an initiative of Esteban Segarra, a professor at the Law School of the University of Azuay.

José Chalco Quezada, Dean of the Faculty of Legal Sciences, said that in a country with a diversity of attitudes, such as Ecuador, these misdeeds are very common and concluded his speech by thanking and congratulating this idea, which undoubtedly serves as support for the students of the branches of law.

Estefany León, throughout his speech, spoke of the number of hate crimes in the country and described these crimes as "positions of intolerance" and acts that seek to attack human dignity.

The speaker commented that the racism that persists in the country and in Cuenca is sustained by prejudices and stereotypes created since childhood.

"Many times we are not aware of the racism that we have, and it is very serious, since it involves and sustains the exclusion of ethnic groups, poverty and many other social issues that must be worked on today," concluded Estefany León.
