The opera La Traviata premiered in Cuenca

This 5, 6 and 7 of July was presented at the Teatro Carlos Cueva Tamariz in the city of Cuenca the opera La Traviata, by the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi.

It was a production of the Ecuadorian-Hungarian Artistic Music Foundation (MusArtEH) in co-production with the Cuenca Symphony Orchestra, Opera Fest, the Mayor's Office of Cuenca, the University of Azuay and the Ministry of Culture and Heritage.

The role of the UDA in this co-production was from the management of the image of the event to the participation of the choir and the dance company with all its team of artists and teachers.

“We do it because in our culture development plan, one of the objectives is to promote the formation of public spaces; Another is to democratize access to the arts and one of the lines of action -probably the most important- is that of the performing arts ”, said Anna Tripaldi, Director of Culture of the UDA.

The stage direction of La Traviata was in charge of the master Javier Andrade Córdova, who has a vast national and international experience in large staging, and the musical direction was the responsibility of Miguel Meissner, Conductor of the Cuenca Symphony Orchestra.

The event counted with the participation of some of the most important lyric singers in the country: Vanesa Regalado, Xavier Rivadeneira, Alex Rodriguez, Vanessa Freire, Jorge Regalado, Santiago Arévalo, David Peña and Gabriela Méndez.

The cast was made up of the Youth Choir of the "José María Rodríguez" Conservatory and the Dance Company and the Choir of the University of Azuay.

"It is adorable that all these guys sacrifice their daily tasks to do this great work without remuneration, obviously at some point this must change, we think that this production is the definitive step to the institutionalization of the operatic movement that have started in Cuenca a few years ago" said Miguel Meissner.

La Traviata was presented within the framework of the Cuenca es Ópera program as an initiative of cultural managers who seek to consolidate the thought that Cuenca can be the opera capital of Ecuador.

The choice of this work was part of the process of building the opera in Cuenca, since due to its importance and complexity, the directors have been proud to elaborate it with local work and national talent, that is, an Ecuadorian production.

"The opera has a great projection in Cuenca and in the country, we hope that through these efforts will be able to consolidate spaces to create Ecuadorian opera with our stories, composers, writers and scene creators, that would be the long-term objective", commented Javier Andrade Córdova.
