Textile dyeing and handling manual: a valuable contribution to culture and sustainability

On April 25, the University of Azuay, together with its Publishing House and the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Art, presented the book “Manual de Textiles” by the authors Ma.Isabel Pinos, Ma. Belén Cordero and Cecilia Palacios; event that is framed within the fulfillment of the sustainable development objectives, mainly objectives 4: Quality Education.

The event was attended by authorities, teachers and students from our university community, friends and family of the authors.

This manual reports the procedures for handling polycotton textile bases dyed with natural dyes, which were systematized at the laboratory level based on experiments that were due to planning, variation of some factors, determination of results and execution of quality tests.

It is made up of three sections. The first section includes fundamental design concepts, which are applied to obtaining dyed textiles with different characteristics. The second section contains the processes corresponding to different textile manipulations used to generate reserve areas in the dyeing stage, as well as tactile or three-dimensional textures.

In the third part of the book, a guide is presented to carry out the dyeing procedures using dyes extracted from cochineal, chilca, indica and walnut in order to apply them on polycotton textile bases.

The welcoming words were given by our rector, Francisco Salgado, who pointed out the importance of the work presented, it is the result of these years of work and contains valuable cultural contributions.

The presentation of the book was led by Genoveva Malo, academic vice-rector, who mentioned that this book reflects the sense of rigorous academic contributions that are born from the genuine will to share knowledge and enjoy its discovery.

The official launch was made by Ma. Belén Cordero, textile and fashion designer from the University of Azuay and laboratory designer at TEXLAB, representing the authors.
